As we visit poor old Jude in the country, we find her facing a fashion dilemma. Never one to follow the pack, but to lead it, she's finding it difficult to locate the pack. On close scrutiny of her neighbours she finds that the fashion of choice is polyester, denim and an occasional cotton work shirt. Thrilled that at least the chi-chi habit of wearing gumboots for outside work has caught on with these rural dwellers (and totally oblivious to the fact that it's been that way since rubber was invented), she's dismayed to learn that buying them necessitates a trip to the local feed store - an excursion not best made on an empty stomach. Taking courage in hand, she travels to the nearest town, enters that bastion of male farmerness, and asks for gumboots. On receiving a completely blank stare from the completely blank sales clerk, she toddles off down the aisles in her Italian mules and locates the boots herself. As usual, Jude is disappointed. Instead of the co-ordinated two-tone khaki that Goddess Martha wears, she's given a choice of black and orange in ladies or black and orange in men's, with the only pair in her size housing a respectable spider/fly ecosystem. Jude throws up in the boot and goes home to start her weekly packing exercise for the move back to the city. |
